Imagine The Roc Vs. Young Money
Vs
Could you imagine the media frenzy? Imagine having to choose a side? Who would you side with if these two moguls decided to take their genius protege and launch an all out lyrical attack against the other. We know we're just speculating because all of these guys have worked with one another and the over all spectrum of the hip hop game seems to be pretty quiet and geared towards making the best possible music. But what if we were at the early stages of the second largest main stream beef in the history of hip hop? If you look hard enough, the story is there. It all started on 106 & park when Birdman was asked his opinion on Jay-Z being named the #1 hip hop artist by MTV.
"Well I feel like, as far as number one to me, that don't really matter, it's about who makes the most money and do the most," Baby explained in an interview. "I think my son do the most, rap the most, he do the most shows, we do the most so if we do the most, how could you be number one if you ain't making the most? No, no, [beef]. Nothing personal, they just asked me my opinion and that was my opinion. I think we do the most and make the most, so if you don't like it, that's on you. I can't see past Wayne, so I can't see Jay-Z."
Despite baby coming right out and saying there is no beef and his opinion is nothing personal, it was certainly heard loud and clear by The Roc Family and most notably Jay-Z. Jigga man wasted no time addressing what he thought of Birdmans assessment of the top spot in hip hop. Except Jay-Z didn't respond in a quote or an interview. Hov did it the best way he knows how, lyrically in the first single to drop off the most anticipated album of the year, Watch The Throne a collaboration album with Kanye West. In the single H.A.M., Jay says
N---as fantasize about the sh-- that I do daily
Like these rappers rap about
all the sh-- that I do really
I'm like really, half a billi, n---a?
Really you got baby money
Keep it real with n---as,
n---as ain't got my lady money
Watch the throne, don't step on our road
Bad enough we let you step on our globe
That's a pretty serious shot fired, right? Like this doesn't exactly seem like some friendly clowning between two of the biggest camps in hip hop. And it doesn't stop there. Drake decided to get his two cents in on the matter. Drizzy recently made a trip across the pond to London and stopped in with Tim Westwood for a quick interview. Everyone in the media keeps calling Drakes quote a "friendly jab" at his former collaborators. You decide for yourself. Drake said
"We still got to do that album. I heard two other guys are coming out with an album together, too. There’s two other rappers are coming out with an album together. I don’t know where they got that idea but… I caught wind of it through the grapevine that there’s some other album with two guys rapping on it."
Drake and Lil Wayne did announce that they were going to do a joint album before Weezy was actually sent to the joint. Did Kanye and Jigga swoop in on the idea while Wayne was incarcerated? It's interesting to think about. This whole thing could be nothing and could be brushed over before we know. But what if it didn't? What if everyone in the game is forced to kind of side one way or the other? Producers, other emcees, fans, everyone. On the flip side it could be one of the greatest marketing strategies in hip hop history. The two biggest in the game firing shots at each other lyrically while the whole world of hip hop waits anxiously to hear what the next mogul will say. Not a bad way to sell some records. But maybe Wayne squashed this a while ago when he said Jay-Z is "The Best Rapper Alive" and he called himself "The Next Rapper In Line". Friendly Jabs between two camps who really respect the level of hip hop produced by both, or the beginning of the new generations Biggie and 2pac. We've only seen the two biggest in the game beef before, and ....well.... you know.
